Vocabulary Review! Crossword Puzzles

It's the end of the semester, again.  Here's a fun little vocabulary review activity--student-created crossword puzzles.  I'm an advocate of student-directed, student-initiated activities to boost motivation and engagement.

I put my students in pairs, and had each pair choose 6-8 words from our vocabulary list.  Then, I had them set up their crossword puzzles.  I gave them graph paper to do their planning on. This was valuable, since my students struggle with literacy and spelling.  In the case of crossword puzzles, spelling is integral.

Then, they wrote clues for the words and had another group complete their puzzle.  I just thought it was a fun twist on your usual "study vocab" activity before a test.
